Episode #98 Luke 15:8-10
Welcome
Amy:
Welcome to The Christgazing Podcast. I am Amy Burgin and I’m usually here with my daughter Joy. She’s out this week because she just got married and she’s working hard to finish up the last semester of her Bachelor’s degree in communication at the University of Incarnate Word. But don’t worry, she will be back.
I don’t know what your season looks like right now, but mine has been unusually fast and furious with unexpected events on top of the usual fast and furious of life with full-time jobs and family. The last few months have been especially difficult. My cousin and I were chatting yesterday and we can’t remember the last day we took a break. Life just keeps throwing unexpected curve balls and we have no choice but to keep swinging.
I thought I might get a break this weekend. I looked forward to the light at the end of the tunnel. But then, my husband’s mother was released from the hospital after three surgeries and still recovering from a lung infection. This means my husband is now staying at her house in another town, over an hour away, and I’m cooking meals to see them through. On top of that, two days ago, my husband was in a car accident. He’s not injured but his truck required a tow and it’s not drivable, so we’re down to sharing one car.
Why am I telling you this? Because these events discouraged me. I thought I saw a light at the end of the tunnel, only to discover, I’m nowhere near the end of it. And this is where I heard Jesus speak to me. It sounded something like this, “Amy, you set your saving grace on the light at the end of the tunnel, but I am your saving grace, the Light who is with you in all the tunnels of life.”
And that’s what this podcast is all about, taking time to remember, seek, and find Jesus, Light with us, in every situation. Each week we read a portion of scripture several times and create stillness after each reading so we might also be still and know God with us.
We are in a series that takes us through the book of Luke.
Pour Out Your Heart to God
Amy:
Before we read today, take time to share your heart with God. We do this each week; we pour out our hearts to God, exposing the deception, division, diversion, and discouragement inside us. We make room for God to exchange these with truth, unity, focus, and encouragement. So give God your fear and frustration, your loneliness and togetherness, your questions and concerns in this next minute.
What Does This Passage Say About God?
Amy:
I’m going to read today’s text two times. As I read, consider the question, what does this tell me about God?
Luke 15:8-10 “Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? 9 And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ 10 In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
Again?
Luke 15:8-10 “Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? 9 And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ 10 In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
Take a minute to be still and know what this says about God.
[Pause and know]What Does This Passage Say About People?
Amy:
As I re-read the text, consider the question, What does this say about people?
Luke 15:8-10 “Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? 9 And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ 10 In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
Take the next few moments to answer the question, what does this passage tell you about people?
[Pause and know]Lord, What Would You Have Me Know Or Do Today?
Joy:
As I read for the last time, ask God, “Lord, what would you have me know or do today in response to this passage?” If it helps, put yourself in the narrative.
Take the next minute to ask God, “Lord, what would you have me know or do today in response to this passage?”
[Pause and listen]Blessing
Amy:
Christgazer, the Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace. And may you turn your face toward Jesus today and know him personally.
One Response
Amy:
When you find yourself lost in a dark, dirty place, may you know Jesus as the one who lights a lamp, sweeps the room, and searches carefully until he finds you.
When your worth is covered in dirt and you have forgotten your value, may you know God as the one whose image you bear. A coin bears the image of the government, maybe Caesar, so it belongs to Caesar. But you, you bear the image of God, because you belong to God, as a son or daughter, who looks like him.
May you know that he’s not disappointed about the dirt that covers your face. No, his heart is a heart of joy when he finds you, he is pleased to take you out of the fifth, and his heart is full of pride for you, so much so that he wants to show you off to all his friends and throw a party.
And so if you relate to the lost coin, whose value was trampled, may your head be lifted.
And if you call yourself a friend of Jesus, may you celebrate with him the ones he loves so very much.
