Amy lovingly invites readers to open their hearts and spiritual eyes to unlock ethereal truths found in this natural wonder.  For those of us looking toward the heavens for inspiration, this book is a must read. —Mario and Danielle Lopez, Author and Co-Author of How I Know

“Amy Burgin has crafted an overview of the Total Solar Eclipse that introduces us to the grace, wonder, and faithfulness of God. Her words, from a solidly biblical perspective, compare and contrast the glory of a solar eclipse with the story of the world and my own place in it—a tiny speck in the universe and yet a valued, loved, and cherished child of God. Thanks to Amy’s clear writing, scientific principles stick and spiritual concepts unfold. You will want a copy of The Glory of the Total Solar Eclipse to go with each pair of viewing glasses you share! —Mandy Pallock, Author of The Question Habit

Amy Marie Burgin has given us one of the year’s best inspirational books, “The Glory of the Total Solar Eclipse: Discovering God’s Extravagant Love in Its Path.” The widely traveled author has seen many of the world’s wonders, “but none left me as awestruck as the Total Solar Eclipse.” Profoundly moved by the event, she transitioned into a new career “supporting space science” and determined to write a book about her experience, conducting years of research in the process. The result is a book that is part memoir, science, and history with a meditation on human existence. The author says, I believe the creator of the universe wants to speak to us through all of creation, including the Total Solar Eclipse.

The book describes aspects of Burgin’s life from childhood, college and marriage, leading to the August 21, 2017, total eclipse of the sun she and her family witnessed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. The author describes the event as a personal epiphany, prompting her to learn all she could about the Total Solar Eclipse, finally concluding that its main significance is what it says about the world.

Burgin lays out a cogent account of “how each phase of the eclipse maps to the story of the world.” Scientists have divided the TSE into five phases, the central one, “Totality”, is when the sun is hidden completely by the moon, revealing the sun’s atmosphere, tendrils of fire looking like a fiery gold crown. Phases two and four display what is called the “Diamond Ring Effect.” “Rings” and “crown” are the terms scientists use when describing the TSE and the symbolism of the words becomes obvious in the author’s explanation.

The story of the world, as told in the Bible, can be directly mapped to the phases of the Total Solar Eclipse. Once you see it, it’s hard to unsee it, the full story from Creation and Fall to Redemption and Restoration in the total eclipse of the sun.

Throughout the book, Burgin shows great insight into Biblical teachings as she draws parallels between scripture and the wonders of nature. She never tries to stretch a point to fit her thesis but writes in a lucid and convincing style. She says it in just the right way, never coming across as sermonizing. Each section begins with a personal anecdote followed by a smooth transition into the body of the chapter, ending with a heading, So . . . What’s the point? that states the central idea.

The book is stunning on several levels, not the least is the author’s explanation of the Total Solar Eclipse. Burgin’s analysis and description give the reader a “you are there” experience, revealing the event to be one of the greatest of natural wonders. A survey of the TSE throughout history and how it fits in astronomical science prepares the reader for the main theme: the parallels with the Biblical story of the world.

Burgin is quite revealing of her inner self, the existential questions and doubts that have assailed her at times, and the thoughts and feelings every human is subject to. The author is to be applauded for frankly discussing these things, how she overcame her own failings, obtaining redemption and restoration, and giving herself as an example of what is laid out in the book. Her personal testimony gives power to all else that she writes.

Burgin has written an original work in “The Glory of the Total Solar Eclipse” and after reading it I have a strong desire to someday see a total eclipse of the sun. The book is a stellar achievement, a true gem in the inspirational category, and has my highest recommendation. —J.L. Askew for Reader Views
