Pour Out Your Heart to God

Before we read today’s passage, take a few moments to give God the things that are on your mind. Maybe it’s a heart bursting with hope, love, gratitude, grief, fear, exhaustion, or a mix of all of these things and more. Whatever is on your mind, name it and bring it to the Lord in this next minute.
What Does This Passage Say About God?

As I read the passage for the first time, consider the question, What does this passage say about God?
Luke 9:37-45 The next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him. A man in the crowd called out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. A spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams; it throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It scarcely ever leaves him and is destroying him. I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they could not.”
“You unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.”
Even while the boy was coming, the demon threw him to the ground in a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the impure spirit, healed the boy and gave him back to his father. And they were all amazed at the greatness of God.
While everyone was marveling at all that Jesus did, he said to his disciples, “Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.” But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from them, so that they did not grasp it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.

As I read for the last time, ask God the question, “Lord, what would you have me know or do today in response to this passage?”

Christgazer, the Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace. And may you turn your face toward his, incline your ears to his voice, and listen carefully to him.

When the father begged Jesus to drive out an evil spirit from his only son because the disciples couldn’t do it, Jesus had an interesting response, “You unbelieving and perverse generation.” Perverse, perverted – it means backward, twisted, totally upside down, opposite that which is right. Could it be Jesus called them perverted because their understanding of the chain of command was upside down and corrupt?
If it is topsy turvy to allow a scorpion to march across your living room floor when you are wearing steel toe boots and can easily squash it, how much more so is it topsy turvy to allow a demon to continually slam a boy to the ground when given the power and authority of Christ to cast it out?
Jesus set things upside right when confronted with this upside down situation.
Afterward, while everyone marveled at the miracle, Jesus had something else on his mind when he told his disciples, “Listen carefully to what I’m about to tell you. The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.”
Things would look topsy turvy again, but He would set things upside right in the end.
