The tenants of the vineyard hated their landowner

For when the owner sent his servant to collect some of the vineyard’s fruit

They beat him and threw him out.

And the people did not gasp at this.

The owner sent a second servant but

They treated him shamelessly and threw him out.

And the people did not gasp at this.

The owner sent a third servant but

They wounded him and threw him out.

And the people did not gasp at this.

So the owner sent his son but

They thought, He is the heir — if we kill him, the vineyard will be ours.

So they did.

And the people did not gasp at this.

Finally the owner went to the vineyard himself and

He killed the wicked tenants and gave the vineyard to others.

And the people gasped, “God forbid!”

The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.

If only they had known and loved the generous one, who will not be thrown out.

He is the heir — if we kill him, the vineyard will be ours.

The heir

beaten

shamed

wounded and

killed

that they might love and become co-heirs with him.

Ephesians 2:19-20 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.

Romans 8:17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
